The theologians are already falling all over themselves [Religion, Aug. 10] to assure us that the possible discovery of extraterrestrial life is no big deal to them.
Horsefeathers! If confirmed, this discovery presents serious questions for most religions and profound problems for those, like Christianity, that claim the faithful can have a personal relationship with God. If it is shown that life is not unique to this planet, it will require an immense level of self-centered arrogance to continue to believe that a god who created the universe has any particular interest in us either individually or as a race.
The next few years should be an interesting period for both religion and science. Not the least of the church's problems is that it no longer has the power to silence the scientists while attempting to give the event a positive theological spin. This discovery may indeed "expand our concept of God" -- much like the Hindenburg disaster expanded our concept of lighter-than-air aviation.
